Don’t worry read this article and find out the simple steps to dye your hair at home. The right color will not only cover your grays and make you look young but will also add sparkle to your eyes.

1.) Collect the Tools to Dye Your Hair:

Before you start to dye your hair you need some tools that are not available in the hair color boxes. Here is a list of items that are required in this process. Make sure you keep all these items beforehand so that your work becomes easy and is done fast.

Bowl: A bowl doesn’t come in a hair color box, but it is required to mix up the dye and swirl the brush.
Clips: This is another important item required. It ensures your work is done smoothly without any trouble. While sectioning your hair you will need clips.
Rattail Comb: Doing the work section wise ensures the effectiveness and neatness. You will need a rattail comb to section your hair.
Paintbrush: Use a paint brush that is one and a half or two inches wide.
Timer: A timer ensures that you don’t wind up with a different color and only get the color that you expected.

2.) Preparing Your Hair Before Using Dye:

Before you start to dye your hair it is very necessary to make sure that your hair is in a good condition. Shampoo your hair atleast one day or two days before dyeing. This ensures that the dye is binded into the hair easily because of the natural oils. The dye will blend naturally with the hair and lasts for a longer period of time. If you have to dye hair, then don’t use a conditioner after shampooing as it eliminates all the natural oils.

3.) Choosing the Right Formula:

Gone are the days when you just had to pick a box shade from the shelf of a drug store. In the last few years, box dyes have progressed a lot. Now they are available in the liquid formula, crème, mousse and foam. For every specific purpose, there is a color formula created. For example, if you want a pre-spot touch-up then you can use a mousse and apply it to the targeted areas. Foam is used for an all over the application. If you want to cover up your grays then a crème formula is perfect for that purpose.

4.) Picking Up the Right Color to Dye Your Hair:

After you have figured out the right formula for yourself now is the time to pick the right shade to dye your hair. If you are dyeing your hair for the first time it is suggested that you choose a shade that is two tones lighter or darker than the actual color of your hair. If you are dyeing your hair at home then don’t go from black to platinum. You can also use temporary dye if you are dyeing for the first time. Temporary dye washes out after using 7 to 10 shampoos. Permanent dye takes 6 to 8 weeks to come out.

5.) Things to Do Before You Start Dyeing Your Hair:

There are certain things that you need to keep in mind while dyeing your hair. Here is a list of things to do before you start with the process.

Make sure that you protect your clothes and home from dye stains. Instead of wearing your favorite shirt, wear an old shirt that you can easily throw. Spread newspaper on the floor in the area where you are dyeing your hair. Keep paper towels near yourself.
Surround your shoulders with a towel or a color cape. Use a safety pin or a clip to pin the towel in the front of the neck.
Comb your hair properly to remove all sorts of knots and tangles. This will ensure that your hair is evenly dyed.
Before dyeing your hair, coat the neck, Earline and the hairline. Coat it with a lip balm, conditioner or a Vaseline.
Wear gloves before you start dyeing your hair. Gloves generally come in the dye. Make sure you wear gloves otherwise you will end up dyeing your own hair.
